Transforming Historical Buildings: Mere United Reform Church, Wiltshire

Client: Greendale Construction

Location: United Reform Church, Mere, Wiltshire

Description of Works: Full electrical upgrade to include lighting, power – including distribution boards, emergency lighting, fire alarm system and refuge call points.

Duration: April – June 2021

Background: Mere United Reformed Church was built in 1868 by Mr Charles Jupe as a Congregational chapel, joining the United Reformed Church at its formation in 1972. It stands today, much as it always has and is a commanding feature of the town. Mere is a charming and historic town located in the South West of Wiltshire. Sitting beneath the South West Wiltshire Downs – much of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – Mere is adjacent to and easily accessed from the A303.

Scope: Greendale Construction Ltd were instructed to refurbish the church to provide a more welcome feel to and greater flexibility for its use by the local community. The Greendale team have ‘exacted new stonework to form a new accessible entrance and more welcoming feel to the church, which, by the construction of a new mezzanine floor has created a more flexible space and worship area.’

We have a strong track record in working on iconic and historical buildings and were awarded the project by Greendale Construction. The Wessex Electricals and Wessex Fire & Security teams were instructed to deliver a full electrical upgrade and install a new fire alarm system.

The works have created a more safe, secure and energy efficient church building for the local community and visitors, equipped with enhanced lighting and electrical facilities including a self-test emergency lighting system as well as new refuge call points and the infrastructure to build on in the future.

All works were completed sympathetically throughout, this included all wiring being installed in steel conduit as specified by the client to ensure that the aesthetics of the exposed stonework within this building were maintained.

Works were completed skilfully and collaboratively by our teams and delivered ahead of schedule for Greendale.
