Innovative Solutions for Associated British Ports

Associated British Ports Holdings Ltd owns and operates 21 ports in the United Kingdom, managing around 25 per cent of the UK’s sea-borne trade. The company’s activities cover transport, haulage and terminal operations, ship’s agency, dredging and marine consultancy.

In expanding their facilities, the client undertook the conversion of an old Fyffes banana cold store, into a more modern and versatile facility. One of the main issues faced was the security protection for the large void above the arrivals / departure lounge, which suffered from a constant ingress of pigeons.

Wessex Fire & Security came up with an innovative solution using Linear heat sensing cable to provide protection to the void areas, ensuring that no false alarms would be caused by the feathered residents, which may otherwise have occurred with the conventional use of Optical Beam Detection.

In addition, the terminal lounge was fitted out with the latest Voice enhancer sounder / strobes to alert members of the public to a fire condition without causing undue panic, and the strobes ensured compliance with Disability Discrimination Act requirements.

Wessex Fire & Security also fitted a purpose manufactured security control panel to enable doors to be released or locked in accordance with the clients requirements.

Henderson Green Consultant. said “Wessex provided an excellent solution to our Fire & Security requirements. We found their engineers first class. We have worked with Wessex on a number of projects and find them to be a very professional company.”
