Sparkies Fly at Wessex Group

Three more apprentices from Dorset’s Wessex Group have become fully qualified, graduated and are now working for the family firm.

Electricians Billy Watson, Callum Child and Ryan Guy have spent four years honing their skills within the various companies under the Wessex Group umbrella.

They were on day release at Yeovil College’s north Dorset training centre, which is conveniently next door to the group’s HQ in Shaftesbury.

Each apprentice passed the EAL Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment and are now employed at Wessex Electricals.

Currently there are 24 apprentices in the group and there is a new intake each year and places are highly coveted.

The company has put a great emphasis on training apprentices since retired Group Chairman, Tony Morgan founded Wessex in 1963.

His first apprentice, Gordon Green, who retired last year, worked his way up to managing director of Wessex Electricals.

Rachel Revell, HR Manager, Wessex Group, said: “All our apprentices are monitored by highly experienced staff and with our range of businesses they get to learn all aspects of their trade. There is also a solid mentoring structure and regular liaison between the apprentice, the various companies and the college.”

Simon Morgan, Director of Wessex Group, said: “Billy, Callum and Ryan have been working on various contracts across the South West. They all now have a wealth of experience and we’re delighted to have them as fully qualified electricians working within the group.”
